The web and my email box is just buzzing with ways to save at Walmart today! I thought I would talk about peelies and how you can use them to your advantage at Walmart.

What are peelies?

In case you never heard of them, peelies are simply coupons that are attached to the outside of the boxes, jars, bottles and other packaging on products. You can peel the coupon off and bring it straight to the register for your savings.

Why use peelies at Walmart?

Although you can find peelies practically anywhere grocery products are sold, I especially like to use them at Walmart. This is for two reasons. The first is that there seem to always be a high number of peelies available at Walmart. It is a real great treasure hunt when you go through the aisles and spot a shiny peelie just poking out there on the shelves. The second reason is that Walmart allows you to combine the peelie coupons with other manufacturer coupons. This means that you can greatly increase your savings and even get products for free. Most grocery stores that I know near me don’t allow the use of more than one coupon per product, no matter what it is.

Peelie etiquette

Because peelies seem to be there for the taking, many shoppers will grab the peelies off if the box but then not buy the product. They may save the peelie for a time when the product goes on sale or comes down in price. This is considered bad etiquette and can make others pretty angry. Why? Well, sometimes people plan their shopping based on knowing that particular products contain peelies and expect them to be there when they get to the store. Also, sometimes peelies that aren’t used immediately never get used, wasting the deal.

Okay, give me a peelie deal

The best way to save with peelies is to combine them with the sales and coupons. For example, right now you can get an entire box of the Taco Bell Dinner kit for only 28 cents when you combine the 75 cent peelie on the box with the $1 off 1 Taco Bell coupon that is in the current (June) All You Magazine.

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
