Foods That Contain Vitamin D

Posted on Wednesday, January 28th, 2015 at 7:00 am

Raw salmon filletsThere is more than one way to get enough vitamin D. Some people get it by taking a vitamin that includes it. Others are able to obtain vitamin D simply by spending time outside in the sunlight. Another good way to get some vitamin D is consume foods that naturally contain it.

According to the Vitamin D Council there is something special about vitamin D that is different from other vitamins. Your body can make its own vitamin D. However, if you aren’t able to get enough sunlight, then you will need to get vitamin D from food. Another interesting thing about vitamin D is that your body can turn it into a hormone. Vitamin D also helps the body absorb calcium.

What foods contain vitamin D? Salmon is one of the richest sources of vitamin D. A three ounce serving of salmon provides 447 IU (international units) of vitamin D. A three ounce serving of trout can give you 645 IU of vitamin D. (The exact amount can vary depending on the species of trout and whether it was wild or farmed).

Canned tuna is another good source of vitamin D. Three ounces of water-packed canned tuna provides 154 IU of vitamin D. Those of you who enjoy eating fish can happily add some salmon, trout, or canned tuna to their meals.

Eggs are a source of vitamin D. One large egg provides 41 IU of vitamin D. It is also possible to get some vitamin D from fortified orange juice or fortified milk. Keep in mind that orange juice doesn’t contain vitamin D naturally, and neither does milk. Check the package label and look for the word “fortified” – and then read the nutrition label to find out if a specific brand of orange juice or milk has been fortified with vitamin D. Some breakfast cereals have been fortified with vitamin D, too.

Mushrooms are another source of vitamin D. This is great news for people who are vegan and do not want to consume any fish, eggs, or milk.

When it comes to vitamin D, not all mushrooms are equal. Some types of mushroom will contain more than others. Maitake mushrooms have a higher concentration of vitamin D per serving than any other type of mushroom. One cup of diced, raw, Maitake mushrooms have 786 IU of vitamin D.

Portabella mushrooms that have been exposed to ultraviolet light during processing also have more vitamin D than those that weren’t exposed to ultraviolet light. One cup of unexposed portabella mushrooms that have been grilled contain 17 IU. The same amount of portabella mushrooms that have been exposed have 634 IU.

Foods that Have Vitamin C

Posted on Wednesday, January 21st, 2015 at 7:00 am

Orange FruitVitamin C is good for you! Many people start their day with a glass of orange juice because they realize that oranges contain vitamin C. However, there are plenty of other foods that also contain vitamin C. Start adding some of these foods into your meals.

Why do our bodies need vitamin C? WebMD points out that this particular vitamin offers plenty of health benefits. It can help people whose immune systems were weakened due to stress. Vitamin C is sensitive to stress and can be depleted by it. It has been said that the amount of vitamin C in a person’s body is an indicator of their overall health.

You may have heard that vitamin C can “cure” a cold. That’s simply not true. However, it can help prevent a flu from developing into more serious complications, and it may shorten the length of a cold that you are currently suffering from. Vitamin C can also help prevent the skin from aging. It may also help improve macular degeneration, reduce inflammation, and reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

What foods contain vitamin C? The first one that comes to mind for many people is oranges. This delightfully bright colored fruit was once seen as a special treat that a child hoped to find in his or her Christmas stocking. According to Good Housekeeping, one medium orange contains 70 milligrams of vitamin C and 62 calories. A three-fourths cup of orange juice contains 61 to 93 milligrams of vitamin C and somewhere between 79 to 84 calories.

You can also get vitamin C from other citrus fruits like grapefruits, lemons, and limes. Long ago, sailors would bring citrus fruits on board ships so they could consume them and prevent developing a disease called scurvy. Vitamin C can also be found in tangerines and clementines.

The fruit that has the most vitamin C in it is the guava. It has 188 milligrams of vitamin C. You can also get some vitamin C from kiwi, strawberries, cantaloupe, papaya, raspberries, honeydew melons, and plantains.

In addition to fruits, there are plenty of vegetables that contain vitamin C. One half cup of red pepper contains 142 milligrams of vitamin C. The same amount of cooked red pepper offers 116 milligrams of vitamin C. Most people don’t realize that red pepper has a lot more vitamin C in it than an orange does.

Green peppers are another good choice, offering 60 milligrams of vitamin C per half cup (or 51 milligrams of vitamin C if the same amount is cooked). Are you a fan of Brussels sprouts? They are another good source of vitamin C. Other options include broccoli, cauliflower, collards, tomato juice, and turnip greens.

Foods that Contain Vitamin B

Posted on Wednesday, January 14th, 2015 at 7:00 am

SpinachThere are many people who feel it is very important to eat healthy. Some might be taking vitamins to supplement the nutrition that they are not getting enough of through the foods they eat. It can be helpful to know what foods contain which vitamins. Here is a look at some of the foods that contain vitamin B.

Vitamin B is not just one kind of vitamin. Instead, it is a group of vitamins. The B vitamins include thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folate (which is also called folic acid or folacin), vitamin B6, vitamin B12, biotin, and pantothenic acid. Together, the B vitamins do a wide variety of things for your body.

The B vitamins are often food in meat, fish, and dairy foods. There are also some in certain kinds of vegetables and grains.

Some of the best food sources for thiamin include pork, ham, and dark green leafy vegetables. It can also be found in fortified whole grain cereals and baked goods, wheat germ, enriched rice, green peas, lentils, almonds and pecans. Thiamine is also called vitamin B1.

Vitamin B2, or riboflavin, can be found in milk and milk products (such as yogurt and cheese). You can also get vitamin B2 from asparagus, spinach, and other dark green leafy vegetables. It can be found in chicken, fish, and eggs. Some fortified cereals will contain riboflavin.

Vitamin B3 is called niacin. You can get it from potatoes sweet potatoes, and yellow corn. Or, if you want fancier vegetables, try Jerusalem artichokes, shiitake mushrooms, or asparagus (which also contains B2). Dried and frozen peaches contain some niacin. Citrus juices (grapefruit and oranges) contain some niacin, too. Eating one fresh nectarine is another good way to get some niacin.

Vitamin B6 can be found in poultry and seafood. It can also be found in bananas and leafy green vegetables such as spinach (which contains several B vitamins). Potatoes, which have vitamin B3, also contain vitamin B6. As you might expect, you can find vitamin B6 in fortified cereals.

Folate (otherwise known as folic acid or vitamin B9) can be found in leafy green vegetables such as spinach and turnip greens. Grain products like breads, pastas, and rice are fortified with folate.

The only natural source for vitamin B12 are animal foods. The very best source comes from clams. Other animal sources for B12 include beef, turkey, chicken, oysters, crab, salmon, trout, and herring. What if you are a vegetarian? It is possible to find B12 included in fortified cereals. Some soy products might also be fortified with vitamin B12.
