Unfortunately the sickness season is almost upon us and a few of us may even catch something. To treat the season’s worst symptoms, illnesses, and all around ailments we’ve come up with a list of natural remedies that actually work.

Problem: Sinus Headaches

Solution: Steam

It’s an oldie and a goodie. If you find yourself suffering form sinus headaches or clogged sinuses try inhaling steam by giving yourself a steam bath. Studies have shown that inhaling steam through your nasal passages can relieve pressure which is one of the root causes of a sinus headache. One way to make your steam bath even more powerful is by adding peppermint or eucalyptus oil to your water. The mint scent given off by these oils effects your nasal passages and decongests those passages. One of our favorite ways to do a steam bath is by putting hot water in a fairly large bowl and hovering your head above it. Be sure to place a towel over your head when you’re above the bowl with steaming water so as to trap the steam.

Problem: Cold

Solution: Ginseng

Ginseng has been touted as an all natural remedy for increasing energy and overall health, but new studies have demonstrated this root’s ability to decrease the severity and duration of the typical cold. In 2005 Canadian researchers found that patients who took ginseng everyday had less severe cold symptoms and were ill for a shorter period of time. As for how to consume ginseng there are plenty of teas that make it easy to incorporate the root into your everyday diet.

Problem: Stomach Pain

Solution: Peppermint

It may be hard to believe, but peppermint has been used to relieve stomach pains for ages. Studies have shown that peppermint relaxes the digestive tract which reduces cramping and helps release gas. Peppermint is also another all natural solution for cramps and irritable bowel syndrome. One handy way to add peppermint into your diet is with tea or peppermint tablets.

Problem: Trouble Sleeping

Solution: Melatonin

With colds and coughs it can be tough getting to sleep. Luckily we have an all natural remedy that is not only easy to try, but it has been proven to work! Melatonin is a hormone that is produced by your brain at night which helps control your sleeping cycles. To help you fall asleep faster studies have shown  melatonin tablets are a reliable aid. If you’re worried about finding these tablets in your area don’t fret. Melatonin is sold at drug and grocery stores and is easy to find.

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
