christmasA whole lot of shopping gets done in December! You can save money if you wait until just the right month to make a purchase. Every month, certain things go on sale. What should you buy this month? Exactly when should you buy it? Here are some helpful tips.

Gift Cards
Right now, stores are competing with each other for your dollars. Many will offer special deals that involve gift cards. Shop smart, and you can end up saving money. Look for stores that will give you a free gift card if you buy a particular product.

If you were planning on buying it anyway (as a gift or for yourself) then it is a good deal! Use that gift card, and you can save money on a gift for someone. Or, you can give someone that gift card as a present. Some stores will give you a free gift card if you spend a certain amount of money (on any of their products).

Christmas Decorations
Don’t buy them yet! December is just getting started. If you have all the decorations you need right now, it is to your advantage to hold off on buying more for a little while. Watch for the sales on Christmas decorations, wrap, gift bags, and ornaments that pop up in the middle of December.

Christmas Trees
Families that prefer plastic trees (due to aesthetic preferences, or because a family member is allergic to the real kind) are in luck. Michaels is one of many stores that already have sales on plastic Christmas trees. If you need a new one, now is the time to buy it. If you don’t need one this year, but will next year, it is better to wait until a few days before Christmas. The prices will drop!

Jewelry Boxes
Have you ever tried shopping for a jewelry box? They are very difficult to find – until December rolls around. Suddenly, stores that do not normally carry jewelry boxes have a bunch, in stock, for you to choose from.

If you are planning on giving a friend or family member a jewelry box for their birthday, now is the very best time to buy it. It isn’t necessarily going to be lower in price now than it would be in other months, but it will be much easier to find. Save yourself the hassle later on!

December is a good month to buy hammers, ratchet sets, power tools, and gardening equipment. This is especially true if you live in a state where snow is covering the ground. Lawnmowers are going to be at a low price this month. So are tool sets and gardening tools. These make great gifts for family members who are handy or who cannot wait to start working in their gardens again!

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
