Your stock pile is a vivid, hands on, example of how well you are able to save money on groceries.  Did you know that your stock pile can be used to help you out when you are low on cash?  You can make meals from your stock pile, use it for barter, or get creative with the ingredients that you already have.  These tricks can help you avoid having to spend extra cash when your budget is tight.

One of the advantages of creating a good stock pile is that it puts your own, personal, grocery store right into your home.  Couponing is a great way to save money on the groceries that you purchase.  If you do it correctly, then you may be able to avoid shopping for groceries each and every week.  Just use what you already have, and create a meal out of it.  Save the money that you would have spent on gas to get to and from the grocery store.

Do you have friends or family members who also have stock piles of groceries?  Get together and figure out what each of you has too much of, and what each of you needs right now.  Trade some of your surplus, that you won’t be able to use all of before it expires, with the foods that your fellow couponers have the same difficulty with.  A good barter system can save everyone an extra trip to the grocery store.

Some of your friends, or family members, might be avid gardeners.  Often, a gardener will be in a situation where they end up with more of a particular fruit or vegetable than their family can eat before it goes bad.

See if you can trade some of the foods from your stock pile for some of those extra fruits and vegetables.  The gardener gets some pasta, rice, or other foods that you have too many boxes of.  You get fresh fruits and vegetables that you didn’t have to buy at the grocery store.

What can you do when you run out of pasta?  Now is the time to get creative with the foods that you still have in your stock pile.  It is possible to use a box of instant potatoes to make gnocchi.  This could make a good substitute for pasta when you haven’t got any.  It is also a great way to use up what is leftover in a box of instant potatoes!

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
