Pets are an important part of the family!  We all want to make sure that our dogs, cats, birds, and other pets are getting everything that they need.  If you are a smart shopper, you can pick up some pet products for half the cost.  Here are a few ways to make that happen.

How to Get Pet Products for Half the Price

Sign up for the club card.  You probably have signed up for the store savings card at your grocery store.  Pet stores also have the same type of savings cards.  It costs nothing at all to get one, and it will give you automatic discounts on the pet products you purchase.  Just show the cashier your card.

Do some comparison shopping.  The town I live in has a PetCo and a PetSmart. These are two of the biggest pet stores in the United States.  When you need to buy more pet food, or some new toys for your pet, take a minute to compare the prices.  What is PetSmart selling it for?  Does PetCo have it for less?  Sam’s Club will ship your favorite brand of pet food to you in bulk.  Who has the best price?

Wait for the sales.  This works best if you are shopping for non-essential pet products.  There are a lot of people who enjoy dressing up their dogs in clothing that was designed for that purpose.  A few weeks before Halloween, or Christmas, those costumes are going to be rather expensive.

If you wait until after the holiday is over you can pick up the same thing for around half the price.  The same is true for toys that are holiday specific.  Wait, buy them for 50% off after the holiday is over, and use them next year.

Department stores often have sales on three-day weekends.  Pet stores have started doing this, too.  If you buy pet products during President’s Day weekend, Memorial Day weekend, or Labor Day weekend, you will get them at a very nice price.  Use the savings card from that pet store, and you can get an even better discount.

Buy Dry Food Instead of Wet. I’ve heard of another trick that might work if your pet doesn’t have to be on a specific type of diet.  Often, the kibble food costs less than the cans of wet dog or cat food.  Mix a little of the wet food into a bowl of kibble.  This makes the more expensive food last longer than it would if you were feeding it to your pet all the time.  It can also make your pet more interested in eating the less expensive kibble.

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
