Instead of spending money on new clothes for back to school, you can save money by swapping clothes instead. OutGrowingIn is a clothes swap site for maternity and children’s clothing that works similarly to ThredUP. It’s free to join and only $3 (plus $10.95 for shipping) per box of a clothing. Each box contains 12 items of gently used maternity or children’s clothing.

Why Swap Instead of Buy?

The site really says it all, “a child doesn’t ruin their clothing … they just outgrow it! So, why buy new clothes for kids, when you can swap ’em for a fraction of the price?” Really, swapping kids clothes is a great way to save money!

How Does it Work?

Swapping is so easy. Here’s all you need to do:

  1. Pick a box to have shipped to your door. Boxes are listed by type, size, brand, style, color, and season.
  2. List your own box of gently used children’s clothing by the previously mentioned criteria.
  3. Ship your box when it is chosen. Shipping your box is free with a pre-paid label.

You get to pick a box when you join. After that, you get to pick another box every time another member picks one of yours. You can also earn extra picks by participating in Idea Swap or by listing extraordinary boxes.

How Long Does it Take?

Swapping doesn’t take long at all. Once you’ve listed a box and picked a box, delivery only takes about 5-7 days.

Is There Any Quality Assurance?

Members have the opportunity to rate each other based on the quality of items they receive. You should also post a picture with your listing, and only pick other listings that have a picture as well. If you still receive an exceptionally poor box of clothes, you can contact OutGrowingIn for assistance with reconciling the problem.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for at OutGrowingIn, don’t worry. There are swapping sites for just about everything – check out more swapping sites here.

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
