There is something about Summer that makes people want to relax and take it easy.  Maybe this is due to the heat and humidity.  Your family is still going to want to know what’s for dinner, or breakfast, or lunch.  Here are some cheap and easy to make eats and drinks that won’t drain your budget or your energy level.

How about a nice fruit salad?  There many different kinds of fruit that are in season right now.  Pick up some at your local Farmers’ Market.  Or, get some fresh fruit from your grocery store when it is on sale. Fruit salads are great for Summer because you can serve them cold.  They don’t require you to fire up your stove and add to the heat of the day.

There is a fruit salad recipe by Ina Garten on the Food Network website.  It is called “Fresh Fruit Salad With Honey Vanilla Yogurt”.  It sounds yummy!

TLC has a recipe for “The All-American Burger”.  This would be great for families that like to grill outside.  There are many advantages to grilling.  It can be healthier than frying.  It keeps the cooking heat outside of your nicely air conditioned home.  It is fast and easy – especially if one of your family members enjoys grilling!

A few pounds of hamburger meat can be rather inexpensive.   Pair it with some fresh corn on the cob from the Farmers’ Market or when the grocery store has it on sale.

You can’t go wrong with bacon!  Food.com has an extremely easy to follow recipe for a “Classic BLT Sandwich”.  The main ingredients are super cheap to get from your grocery store.  A loaf of bread, a head of iceberg lettuce, a couple of tomatoes, and a package of bacon can feed your whole family for one meal.

Bacon fries fast.  You won’t have to turn on your oven and heat up your home on a hot day in order to make some bacon.  The crunch of the fresh vegetables, and the water in them, pairs nicely with the salty bacon taste.  The inviting smell of bacon will convince even the pickiest of eaters to try a BLT for lunch.

Family Fun has dozens of recipes for cool, iced, family-friendly drinks to try on hot Summer days.  None of them contain alcohol, so they are safe for children to try.  These should help everyone cool off!

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
