The change in weather from Summer to Autumn affects many people. This is the time of year when people start to get colds and the flu. Not everyone feels the need to get a flu shot, but no one wants to get the flu. Here are some ways to save money on a flu shot.

Use Your Health Insurance
As of September 23, 2010, all health insurance plans have to cover the cost of an influenza (or flu) shot without charging a co-pay, co-insurance, or deductible. Make sure that your doctor is considered to be part of the network of your insurance company. Schedule an appointment with your doctor for a flu shot – and nothing else.

If you receive other forms of treatment at the time you get a flu shot your insurer might be able to charge you for the flu shot (and the rest of the treatment). Go in, get your flu shot, and leave, and the flu shot won’t cost you any money at all!

Try the Pharmacy
Many pharmacies are offering flu shots. If you have health insurance, make sure that the pharmacy that you go to is in your network, and your flu shot should be free. If you don’t have health insurance, you will end up paying for the flu shot. However, you might still be able to take advantage of the deal that comes with the flu shot that the pharmacy is offering.

Vons: Get a flu shot and get 10% off groceries. This deal is not being offered in the state of New Jersey.

CVS: Get a flu shot and get a 20% off Shopping Pass.

Walgreens: Get a flu shot and get a free assessment to see what other immunizations might be right for you.

Jewel-Osco Pharmacy: They accept Medicare and other forms of health insurance. If you have no health insurance, the flu shot costs $29.99.

Target Pharmacy: Flu shots count towards 5% off a day of shopping. This is connected to the Target Pharmacy Rewards program.

No Insurance – Can’t Afford It
Try Planned Parenthood. They can offer flu shots for a low price. Call your local Planned Parenthood and explain that you need a flu shot and do not have health insurance. Some Planned Parenthood clinics are offering flu shots for $20.00. Others might have a sliding scale of cost, depending on what you can afford to pay.

College students may be able to get a free or low-cost flu shot from their University Health Clinic.
