There are people who take garage sales very seriously. These are the women who seem to know exactly where to find the best garage sales. They come to the sale prepared to haggle for price and carrying empty canvas bags to put their newly bought treasures into. There are also people who simply enjoy checking out a few garage sales every once in a while. Here are some tips to help you find the best garage sales, no matter which category of garage sale shopper you fall into.
Plan ahead. Most garage sales are going to happen on a Saturday or a Sunday. This is because there are a lot of people who have weekends off from work. The person holding the garage sale has time to set it up and organize it, and everyone else has time to travel to it and shop it. The majority of garage sales start in the early morning hours, and can end as early as noon. Don’t sleep in if you want to check out some garage sales!
Check your local newspaper. The Classified section should have a portion that is dedicated to garage sales. People will place an ad to let it be know what day and time their garage sale will be held. Make a note of the ones that are close to you, or that look interesting enough to travel to. Next, get online and check your local Craigslist, to see if you can find more garage sales.
Many towns will have a huge, collective, group of garage sales all on the same day. These are great because you can go to one group of streets, find somewhere to park, and then spend the morning walking around and shopping. If the big garage sale is an annual event, then people will save up items to sell at it. There are two ways to find out about these group garage sales. One is to luckily stumble upon it. Another is to find an ad about it in the local newspaper.
Pay attention while running errands. People will attach small handmade signs onto the street poles at the end of the block. The signs will say where the garage sale is at and the hours that it will be happening. Often, the people who are advertising their garage sale this way are doing it as a last minute effort to get some customers. You may have stumbled upon a garage sale that cannot be found in the newspaper!
