Oscar Party IdeasThese days, seeing a movie in theaters can get expensive. With ticket prices continuing to rise and snack bars gouging us for every last penny in our date night budget, it can be difficult to enjoy the cinema without feeling guilty. One great way to see a great movie without spending a fortune is to have your very own movie night at home! Here are a few ideas to make movie night extra special:

The Popcorn

Popcorn is pretty much the official movie snack. Luckily, you can enjoy popcorn for cheap. You can buy the microwaveable bags or invest in an automatic popcorn popper.  Target sells a popper for as little as $20 on their website. Popcorn kernels can be found at any grocery store and your automatic popper makes it easy to have a fresh treat in minutes! Once popped, you can season your popcorn with seasonings and spices you already have at home. Try using seasoned salt instead of the plain stuff or sprinkling with a little Parmesan cheese. The possibilities are endless!

The Candy

Movies provide us with the perfect excuse to indulge our sweet tooth a bit. For many, eating a box of their favorite candy is just as much a movie-going ritual as eating popcorn. Luckily, you can often find the movie-sized candy boxes in your grocery store for much less. You can also find them in your local dollar store.

Setting the Movie Mood

Dim the lights and snuggle up in your favorite chair or couch to start the movie. I once went to a movie theater where they provided blankets and a small pillow for maximum comfort during the movie. This really made it a special experience. You can get this for no extra cost at home!

The Main Attraction

The days of going to a local store to rent a movie are pretty much behind us. Now, we can get movies instantly at our fingertips for a small fee. If you already subscribe to Netflix or Hulu, you’ll find great new releases being added all the time. If you’re unsure of what to watch, ask you friends for a suggestion, or browse the top ranked movies on your streaming device or on the respective website. Redbox is also an affordable way to see movies freshly released on DVD and Blu-Ray. You can often find free Redbox rentals in the freebie section of our site, so check back often!

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
