It's important to spend time with your partner, but dates can be so expensive. Check out some great ideas for having a fun and frugal date night at home!If you’re on a tight budget, the words “date night” may make you cringe. Between expensive dinners, drinks at the bar, or catching the latest blockbuster, you’ll no doubt drop a pretty penny. Luckily, there are tons of ways to have a great date night without ever leaving the comfort of your home! After all, dates are all about spending time with that special someone in your life no matter where you are. Here are a few ideas to consider.

Frugal Date Night Ideas to do at Home

Picnic Under the Stars

Few things are as romantic as an intimate dinner under the stars. Bring a nice blanket outside along with some lanterns or candle sticks and enjoy a quiet dinner for two. Cook something together or have a variety of finger foods prepared before beginning the date. Sit out back with a bottle of wine and enjoy! You can also download an inexpensive stargazing app in the iTunes app store. Some are free and others are as little as $2.99.

Cook Together

Preparing a meal together is a fun way to catch up on the recent events in each other’s lives. One of you can teach the other how to cook your favorite meal, or you can tackle preparing a totally new recipe together. Another cute idea is to have a “Chopped Challenge” in your own home. Modeled after the popular Food Network show, this idea requires you to visit a store or farmer’s market together. Split up and buy two or three things each. Bring it all home and create a dish using only what you’ve picked out.

Movie Night

There are so many options for catching a movie at home. Instant streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Instant Watch make it easy to search through thousands of titles. Whether you’re in the mood for a hot new release or want to cozy up with an old favorite, you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for. You can also visit Redbox kiosks to rent movies for just $1.00 a night. Redbox often offers free rentals, so check our Freebie section regularly.

Game Night

Keeping a variety of great board games and card games around is a great way to have a date night that is practically free! Pull out your favorite game or invest in a new one and enjoy! You can also set up a game swap with another couple, so you never get bored with your own selection. Invite another couple over for more players and a fun-filled double date!

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
