For anyone looking for a bargain, Craigslist is a must. Craigslist is an online classified listing site that has listing pages for cities all over the United States, as well as other countries around the globe. No matter what you are looking for, Craigslist probably has it – free stuff, cars, houses, housing rentals, clothing, furniture, garage sale listings and more! With all these bargains waiting to be found, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed, right? Well, you don’t have to be. Craigslist is really simple to navigate. Simply select your state and city from the main page, then start browsing for bargains!

Searching Craigslist

If you are looking for something specific, this is the most efficient way to find it. First, select the category you want to search in (for example, “for sale”). You can search more specifically by selecting a sub-category within the main category (for example, “for sale” –> “furniture”). Then, type in a keyword for the item you are searching for (for example, “coffee table”). You can be as vague or specific as you want. Try a few different keywords and see what you find. You can also enter your minimum and maximum price range or select to only see listings with photos.

Browsing Craigslist

If you are simply looking for bargains, you can browse Craigslist by categories that interest you. Perhaps you are furnishing a new house, then the furniture and household categories might be a good place to browse. I was able to furnish an entire apartment with wonderful bargains I found on Craigslist – and for a fraction of the cost of buying new. Sometimes you will find like-new items on Craigslist, or maybe you’ll find something old that can be turned into a fun project. Check daily for new listings – you never know what you will find!

Actively Searching Craigslist

If you can’t find what you are looking for by searching or browsing Craigslist, you can actively seek that item by posting in the “wanted” section of the “for sale” category. You will need to take just a couple of minutes to create a Craigslist account first, then you are free to post all you like!

Making an Offer

Once you find an item listing you would like to make an offer on, contact the seller by either phone or email and make arrangements for the transaction. Maybe you can even put your negotiating skills to use here! Just remember, Craigslist is a public forum so use caution when meeting with a seller you don’t know. To be safe, arrange to meet in a neutral and public location and either take a friend or tell someone where you are going. Other than that, happy bargain hunting!

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
