Gift cards are great! They make quick and easy gifts for friends and family, and everybody loves to get one. You probably were given one or two gift cards during the holidays. But now, a few weeks later, you have run into a problem. How much is on that gift card? Many stores make it super simple for you to discover the answer to that question.

Target lets you check the balance of your gift card online. Simply fill in the Gift Card # or Claim Code (without hyphens) in one box, and put the access number into the other box. There is a picture to help you figure out where those numbers are located on the gift card.

Kmart also lets you check your gift card balance online. Scroll down on their page and look for the part that says “Check Balance & Reload”. Put in the Gift Card # and the PIN. There is a small image to help you find those numbers on the gift card.

Kohl’s has a Balance Inquiry page where you can check the balance of a Kohl’s Gift Card or a Kohl’s Cash & Rewards Card. At the side of the page are three picture of the cards with a red circle that shows you were to find the appropriate number to enter.

Sears lets you check the balance of your gift card online. It looks very much the same as the Kmart set up. Look for the part that says “Check Balance & Reload”. Put in the Gift Card # and the PIN. There is a small image of the back of a Gift Card to help you find the numbers you need to enter.

Best Buy also will let you check your card balance online. Enter the Card Number and the Security Code (PIN). There is an image that will help you locate those numbers on your Gift Card (but the picture is teeny tiny and difficult to read).

Starbucks makes it easy for you to check the balance of your Gift Card. Enter the Card Number (with no spaces or dashes), and then enter the Security Code. If you create a Starbucks account you will get lots of ways to save at Starbucks.

Barnes & Noble will also let you check the balance of your Gift Card online. Enter the Card of Validation Number into one box, and the PIN into the other. Or, you can go to a Barnes & Noble store and ask a cashier to check the balance of your Gift Card for you.

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
