The American Express credit card rewards program is complex.  There are three different types of Membership Rewards programs, and each one can only be utilized if you have a specific type of American Express credit card.  All of their reward programs generate points that can then be used on something else.

One type of American Express credit card rewards program is called Membership Rewards Express.  There are six different types of American Express cards that are eligible for this rewards program.  You earn points when you use your American Express credit card on dining, shopping, entertainment, and travel.

Earn extra points when you use it to shop online.  You can buy extra points if you want to.  The points do not expire, and there is no limit to the amount you can earn.  You can use the points on airline tickets, hotels, vacations, and limited time special offers.

A second type of the American Express credit card rewards program is called Membership Rewards.  There are thirteen different types of American Express credit cards that are eligible for this particular version of their rewards program.

The premium features of this program are focused on travel.  Use your American Express card when you book your travel online.  This earns you some points.  You can transfer those points to your favorite frequent flyer or frequent guest program.  Or, you can use them on travel certificates, car rentals, airline tickets, and more.  The points never expire, and there isn’t a points earning cap.  You can earn more points when you use your American Express card to shop online, and you can purchase points.

A third type of American Express credit card rewards program is called Membership Rewards First.  There are only three types of American Express credit cards that are eligible for this rewards program.  This program offers something called First Benefits.  It gives you access to First Collection, which is a private selection of rewards from premium brands, (including fashion, jewelry, sports cars, and more).  You also get Exclusive Platinum Experiences, which are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that are by invitation only.

The premium features of this rewards program match the ones in the Membership Rewards program.  You also can earn points, and spend them, in the same way as how it works in the other two rewards programs.  The points never expire, and there is no limit to how many you are allowed to earn.

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
