You can find great deals at the thrift store if you know what to look for. Here are tips to help you do that. One way to save money on clothing is to buy it at a thrift store. The prices will be way lower than even the clearance sales at the department stores or boutiques will offer. Here are a few tips to help you find great deals at the thrift store.

4 Tips to Find Great Deals at Thrift Stores

Look closely at the clothing.
Most thrift stores do a good job of weeding out the clothing that has been donated but is unwearable. Even so, you should take a very close look at the clothing you are considering buying. You are going to want to notice its flaws before you buy it and bring it home.

Does it have any rips or tears? If you aren’t a skilled seamstress that pair of ripped jeans is not going to be very useful for you. Are there stains? If so, put it back! Thrift stores often wash the clothing before they put it on the rack. If that stain didn’t come out in the wash, chances are you won’t be able to remove it either.

Try it on.
Sure, that pair of jeans might say it is your size. But, is it really? Thrift stores carry a lot of used clothing. That means those jeans have been through several washings. It may have shrunk down a size or two. Try it on to make sure it fits before you buy it.

Find the new stuff.
Sometimes, you can find brand new, unworn, clothing at the thrift store. People will buy a new shirt, skirt, dress, or other item of clothing, and never wear it. Instead, they donate it to the thrift store. Look for the clothes that have price tags that originated outside of the thrift store. You can buy that item for a fraction of the original cost.

Most thrift stores set up an area where they put the “best” clothing. This section may be slightly pricier than the rest of the store. However, it is where you can find new clothing, clothes that have barely been worn, and even some designer brands.

Ask for a calendar.
Thrift stores often have special days where they give discounts on a specific type of clothing. For example, Sunday could be when the sweaters are on sale. The same store may have jeans on sale on Tuesdays. Each store is different, so ask for a calendar so you will know when to shop.

Bring your ID with you. Some thrift stores give special discounts to teachers, students, or veterans on certain days. Their calendar can show you when that will be. The calendar is a great tool to help you plan when to shop so you get the best deals.

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
