Piggy Bank with PillsMost of the time, when you think about using coupons to save money, it is the grocery coupons that you have in mind. Did you know that you can also get a great deal from the pharmacy by using their coupons and signing up for their loyalty cards? Here are some tips to help you save money at the pharmacy.

Does your pharmacy accept your health insurance? This is important to know. If it does, then you will be able to save some money on your prescription medications. You might want to ask your doctor, or your pharmacist, if a generic version of your medication would cost less than the name brand.

What if your pharmacy doesn’t accept your health insurance? A good way to save money is to transfer your prescriptions to a pharmacy that does take it. Many offer special deals when you do that.

Kmart pharmacy will give Shop Your Way Members up to $100.00 in Kmart Gift Cards with the purchase of up to 4 transferred prescriptions.

Vons pharmacy will give you a $25.00 reward coupon when you transfer your prescription. This offer is valid for people who have the Vons Card through December 31, 2013.

CVS pharmacy lets you earn $5.00 in Extrabucks rewards when you fill 10 prescriptions at CVS pharmacy.

Walmart pharmacy has a special offer where you can get a 30-day supply of your prescription medication for $4.00. Or, you can get a 90-day supply for $10.00.

You can also save some money by getting the loyalty card that the pharmacy offers. This will give you access to coupons. The coupons may be for a wide variety of products from all over the store. Each store has a different name for their loyalty program.

Walgreens has Balance Rewards.

Target pharmacy has Target Pharmacy Rewards.

Rite Aid has a Wellness + program.

CVS has an Extracare Card.

It is also a good idea to get familiar with the store’s coupon policy. One way to do that is to check their website for current information about it. Or, you can ask the sales clerk or pharmacist for information about what kinds of coupons the store accepts. Once you understand their coupon policy, you can find ways to use it to your advantage and save even more money!

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
