national-Coupon-monthWhether you’re a die-hard couponer or you’re just beginning your career in couponing, one thing we can all enjoy is National Coupon Month! That’s right, September is the month that couponers of every shape and size can come together and save. In fact, according to a Valpak Readership Survey, using coupons has the potential to save your family up to $10,000 per year! Despite the mindset of some consumers being that coupons are only for short term savings, responsible and mindful shopping can save you some serious money in the long run. And, more importantly, using coupons make us feel good! Recent studies of couponers found:

  •  Nearly half of respondents age 18-34 said they feel responsible when they use coupons.
  • The top five emotions felt after using a coupon were: satisfaction, happiness, smart, responsible and accomplished; one in five consumers said they feel victorious after using coupons.

To celebrate the holiday Valpak and Savings.com are putting on the 10,000 Reasons to Save Contest which will award a whopping  $10,000 to one lucky winner. With their prize the contest winner will definitely be able to make a dent in financial goals. To win this contest you’ll have to be selected as one of the five finalists.  To be in the running for the grand prize you will have to share your personal reasons for couponing. The selection criteria and weight are as follows: “offers a long-term, obtainable goal (40%); tells an emotionally compelling personal story (40%) and demonstrates thoughtfulness and care taken in writing the entry (20%)”.  The final winner will be selected by the public and each of the four runner-ups will receive a $500 cash prize. Keep in mind this contest lasts through September 15th, so get to writing and good luck!

Good Tip: Saving money is important – especially if you have a lot of expenses like bills to pay, loans to pay off, and all the other things that drain your bank account. Figuring out a way to save money can feel tedious to some, and like a punishment to others. U.S. News suggests that you try one of these money saving challenges. The “No Eating Out for a Month” Challenge This one is self-explanatory. The goal is to avoid eating out for an entire month. This might be super easy for people who enjoy making meals at home. People who really enjoy dining out, or ordering food to be sent to their home, may struggle with this one. It’s worth a try because spending money on take-out is more expensive than buying groceries. The Pantry Challenge This one is a variation of the “No Eating Out for a Month” challenge. The goal is to use up all of your groceries before you buy more. It forces you to try and remember why you bought a food or beverage that you don’t know what to do with, and gives you the opportunity to find a way to use it. The one exemption to this challenge is the foods that have expired. Don’t eat them! Throw them in the trash. The “No Spend” Challenge Make a goal to avoid spending money during an entire weekend. The only exemption in this challenge is that you are allowed to pay bills. This challenge is interesting because it requires creativity. You must be creative and find workarounds for problems that you would typically solve by spending money. You may have a different outlook on spending after finishing this challenge.
