Weddings are special.

Everyone wants their wedding to beautiful, and to go exactly as they planned it.  Sometimes, the dream wedding that you have been thinking about for years is too expensive for you to afford.  Don’t worry!  There are plenty of ways to do weddings on a budget.

Look for sales on gowns.

When my sister got married, she got her wedding dress from David’s Bridal. She also had the bridesmaids get their gowns from there, too.  One of the great things about this particular wedding store is that it seems like it is constantly having a sale.  Scan over their website, and you will see what I mean.  It has sales scattered over it like glitter!  She ended up saving a lot of money on the dresses for herself and her bridal party.

Check out the thrift stores.

I have noticed that a lot of brides donate their gowns to Goodwill, or other thrift stores, after the wedding is over.  If you don’t mind wearing a wedding dress that has been worn once before, than this is a great way to stay under your budget.  Suddenly, a thousand dollar dress can be purchased for maybe $100.

Do it yourself.

When I was in college, a friend of mine had a really fun way to save money on the wedding reception.  Instead of renting a reception hall, or making a reservation in the party room of a restaurant, the happy couple had a backyard barbeque.  They put up streamers, placed nice tablecloths over the folded tables, and had the most relaxed wedding reception I’ve ever been at.  This was also a great way to stay under budget on the food served to all the guests.

Another option is just to elope.

My husband and I did this, and it cost us almost nothing.  I wore my favorite denim skirt, and a white shirt that had a little bit of a lace pattern in it.  He wore clothing that was appropriate for him to wear to work.  The entire wedding cost us nothing more than the fee for the marriage license, and the gas to drive to the courthouse.  For us, this was absolutely perfect!

Shop around for wedding rings.

We got ours from Sears.  If I remember correctly, it only cost a few hundred dollars for the engagement ring and both of our wedding rings.  The rings don’t have to come from a fancy, expensive, jewelry store in order to be beautiful.

Clothing

There’s always stores like Goodwill that will offer amazing prices for clothing.  If you want clothes that are a little more upscale, those stores exist too!  Of course you’ll still be paying a decent amount for the clothes, but they generally look brand new and they’re still half the cost of the original prices.  You can find designer names at some of these stores.  Also, these stores will buy clothing from you, so you can make some money before you shop! Look online for second-hand shops.  A popular one around the United States is Buffalo Exchange. You can also look for clothes on Amazon.com and eBay.com for some great deals!

Computers

Why buy a brand new computer when you can get one that was previously owned for much cheaper! This doesn’t mean that you’ll be buying a computer that someone had for years before you.  These computers really are fairly new.  Check out manufacturer sites, like Dell or HP, or Bestbuy.com for ‘returned,’refurbished,’ or ‘outlet.’

Cars

Buying new isn’t always the best option.  You can get certified pre-owned cars for a great price!  Instead of buying a new car at the base trim and price, why not look for a certified pre-owned car that has all the bells and whistles that you couldn’t afford in a new car? You can find cars that are only a year old with less than 10,000 miles on them! Also, when you buy a certified pre-owned car, it has been checked out by the dealership, so you won’t run into any surprises like you might with a private sale.  To find a car that’s new to you, check out AutoTrader.com or manufacturer websites, like Mazda or Ford.

There are plenty of chances to save money on items that you don’t need to buy brand new.  New to you is often just as good and twice as cheap!

Plan In Advance

Planning your honeymoon far in advance will really help you get a good deal on flights, cruises, hotels, and everything between. If you’re lucky, sometimes last minute deals will pop up, but when it’s something as special as your honeymoon you probably don’t want to leave it to luck. Besides, it’s not too common, and more often than not everything just gets more expensive as dates get closer.

Scour the Web for Deals

The internet is absolutely full of sites looking to get you the best deals on your vacations.  Kayak, Expedia, CheapOair…. the list goes on and on.  For really beautiful hotels and vacations get an invitation to join SniqueAway! They feature four and five star hotels all over the world, any of which would make fantastic locations for a honeymoon.

When you’re looking for deals on these sites, make sure you play around with dates and times of travel.  If you lock yourself into specific dates and travel times you have less options when it comes to deals.  Many of these sites show you the cost on a calendar, so you can see what days of the month are cheapest for flights or hotels. You’ll also most likely get a cheaper flight if you’re willing to fly at odd hours.  Considering you just got married, you’ll be too in love to care that your flight leaves at 2AM.

Go on a Mini-Moon

Maybe a full blown honeymoon isn’t in the budget right now.  A lot of couple are opting for a mini-moon right after the wedding instead!  A mini-moon is either a stay-cation or just a weekend getaway somewhere less expensive than, say, a cruise to the Bahamas.  A mini-moon might be weekend in wine country, a nice hotel by the beach, or even camping in the woods.  What’s great about a mini-moon is that you don’t have to plan too far in advance, you don’t have to cut out a large chunk of time from your schedule, and you save money.  Once you’ve saved money you can go on a big honeymoon a year or two down the road.  It could be perfect for your first anniversary!
