Insert Coupons: Our List and Where’s Valassis?

There’s a lot of outcry in couponer world about the latest decision by Valassis, publisher of the Red Plum insert, to distribute their coupons by mail and internet, instead of in newspapers in selected markets. Now, if you get just one insert a week, well, good for you. But many serious couponers buy several papers on a Sunday - or if you’re like me, you love to dumpster dive. If SmartSource follows Valassis lead, this means that we real coupon mavens will lose a big source of savings.

Rumor has it that Valassis is in trouble, and is behind in their bills. That would include payments to some of the newspapers carrying their inserts. So that’s one possible reason for the withdrawl from newspapers.

And since when is bulk mail cheaper than newspaper inserts?

The affected markets so far are in Indiana,Maryland,New Jersey,North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia,and Washington D.C.

Printables won’t make up for the loss to some couponers - Some stores will not take them, and distributors usually limit the number you can print out.

To those of us who ACTUALLY BUY EXTRA PAPERS to get the coupons - this makes no sense. And to those of us who dumpster dive - well, the thrill is gone.

If you think that is silly - well, the Sunday paper here costs $1.50. If the coupon savings are more than that in each paper, and I am really going to use them - well, do the math. Especially on the days when there is something really good like $3 off cat food or $2.25 off Finish dishwasher gels.

Just what America needs in a recession - less coupon clipping, less savings, and fewer purchases.

Free Circus Tickets

The circus is coming to town in our area soon, which reminds me that I need to tell you how you can get free circus tickets. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, circus, otherwise known as “The Greatest Show on Earth,” offers free tickets for children.

The free ticket program is called “Baby’s First Circus.” Basically, you just have to fill out your baby’s name and birthday, along with your address. The circus will then send you child a free ticket voucher that can be used anytime during his or her lifetime. You can request a ticket for each of your children, although you are limited to one ticket per household per year, and your baby must be 12 months old or younger. There are some exceptions for multiple births and adoptions.

Tickets vouchers can then be traded in at the box office or mailed in when ordering tickets to the circus. You can’t use the voucher on VIP tickets, but they are good for any other seat level.

One extra tip: save the tickets for when the kids are a little older and require their own seats. If they are two years old or under and can sit on your lap instead of a seat, then you don’t need to purchase a ticket for them.

Drugstore.com

I recently discovered how much money and time I can save by buying things online. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve been a fan of shopping online for a while, but for some reason I never thought about buying certain things online, such as everyday household products, such as shampoo, vitamins, diapers and pain relievers online. I either pick them up at the grocery store or trudge over to the drugstore whenever I need them.

A friend of mine has been raving about Drugstore.com in her blog, so I decided to give it a try. Not only was it more convenient, but the prices were competitive with my local grocery store. Furthermore, there are often discount coupon codes and deals for Drugstore.com, as well as rebates.

I also like the convenience factor. I can shop from home, which has been a blessing lately with all of the snow we have been having. There is no more running out between dinner and bedtime just for a roll of bathroom tissue or kids vitamins.

Viva Paper towels is also offering a free sample through Walmart. These are my favorite paper towels to use as homemade baby wipes, because they are soft, strong and feel like cloth. They also come in half sheets. Just separate a bunch and put them in an old wipe container. Then mix some warm water, a drop of baby shampoo and a drop of baby oil and add it to the towels.

Free Sarah Jessica Parker Fragrance Sample. I love trying out new fragrances, and if you have enough samples, you can be a different you each day.
