Buy.com is having a blow out sale on DVDs right now. This is great news, since going out for entertainment is getting to be a bit expensive these days. While there are almost 200 different movies on sale, my target is the movies that are only $5 each. There are plenty of movies that are only $6, too.

The cost to take my family of five to a movie without snacks or even just to a family restaurant is about $40. If we skipped the theater movie, we could purchase eight different movies on DVD during the DVD sale that we could watch over and over again.

If we opted to skip the theater movie and just add HBO to our cable television, it would cost us only $20, but that is still four DVDs that we could own, per month! That would be a nice way of building a library of DVD movies without spending a lot.

I am also going to add a few extra movies for my gift closet. This way, if a birthday or holiday comes up, I can make up a “Movie Night” basket for a nice but inexpensive gift!

At only $5, the stock of movies might go fast, but these are some of the titles I spotted that were still available at that price:

Many of my savvy shopping friends are reporting that Wal-Mart is offering 75% off of Christmas items starting today. This may vary by store, and in fact, the 75% off discount has been offered in select cities, such as Houston, starting yesterday.

The discount seems to be unadvertised, and in some cases, although the items are marked 50% off, they actually ring up at 75% off. In all cases, the Christmas items were moved to a clearance section.

In addition to the most obvious choices of Christmas items, there are other household goods that technically fall into the 75% off sale while being more useful throughout the year. For example, there are red and green flannel sheets, and designer perfume (such as Obsession) that are part of the deal.

I haven’t gotten out to my Wal-Mart today, so I can’t confirm this with my own eyes, but I’ll be heading out soon to check it out for myself.

Normally Wal-mart waits until January 1st to start the 75% off deal, but perhaps they now want to be competitive with other retailers who are heavily discounting. Target is still at 50% off Christmas items in my area, and I haven’t heard of any other retailers discounting more heavily than that.

Well, it is Sunday evening here, and it is time to get back into the routine of life after the long holiday weekend (for a few days before the next long holiday weekend). I have been doing a lot of freezer cooking this week in between family time, but I am not done yet. I’m hoping to stock up on some more groceries and then settle in for the winter.

While most people are familiar with cutting coupons from the newspaper inserts, grocery coupons can actually be found in many different places. Knowing the sources of different coupons can really help you save money when you go grocery shopping. Why come to the store armed with five or six coupons when you can bring an entire envelope?

Here are my favorite sources, other than newspaper inserts, for grocery coupons.

Printable coupons

Check online for free coupons that you can print on your computer at home. Some of these coupons can only be printed once or twice, while others can be printed multiple times. Check here at FreeCoupons in the Groceries category and also in past and future blog posts for many coupons that you can print.

All You Magazine and other magazines

All You magazine is a great source of many coupons to clip. Check out my previous blog that mentions this magazine. Other magazines, such as Good Housekeeping and Women’s Day usually offer grocery coupons as well. Ask friends to save these coupons and get low cost subscriptions.

Blinkies

Blinkies are those coupons that come out of the little machines you can find attached to many store shelves. They are called blinkies because there is usually a little red light on the machine that delivers the coupons. Blinkies usually can’t be doubled or tripled, but they can offer additional savings on sale items.

Manufacturer coupon books

Just by signing up for offers, you can get coupon books in the mail from manufacturers such as Kraft and Campbell. Do an Internet search or check out the Special Offers section here at FreeCoupons.

Grocery store flyers

It is always a good idea to check out the grocery store flyers. They usually have coupons for products or for doubling and tripling that can be used with other coupons. Sometimes the flyers that come in the mail have more or different coupons than the ones available in the store, so check in both places for the best savings.

The day after Christmas has traditionally been a time to line up at the store early, just like Black Friday. This year, retailers have a different strategy. Having already attempted to counter this year’s recessionary pressure by offering deep discounts during the holiday shopping season, few are having special after Christmas sales. Instead, they announced their sales a few days before Christmas, lasting through this week.

So what is a bargain hunter to do?

Well, when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping. Find your local big box discount store, such as Walmart, Target, Kmart, and head on over to look for the clearance sales. You’ll find many holiday items marked at 50% off today – and if you wait a few days, you might find deeper discounts. You will also find the sales that were meant to entice you for last minute shopping still in effect. This is a good day to look for next year’s cards, decorations, or for party food and seasonal candies. Scout the bargains – and then come back LATER unless you think the supply will be gone.

I asked several Walmart clerks in my local store if they anticipated further reductions in clearance prices later in the week. “Mmm, maybe” , they all replied. There are no flyers in the stores, no local flyers available online today. “We don’t usually do a big after Christmas promotion”, said the one in the holiday section. Chatter among customers today was “wait, they always do cut the prices even further”. In the holiday section, there were quite a few artificial trees left, especially the big ones, already at half off. Big inflatable Santas for your yard also took up a lot of shelf space. So, it looks like I will be buying a new tree this year – in a few days.

You will find many great clearance items on sale at ToysRus.  Their after Christmas offerings include many lowest prices of the season, half off, and DVDs at Buy 1 get half off prices.  Keep watching their aisles too.

Usually, the Sunday papers before and after Christmas do not have coupon inserts. This Sunday, there will be an additional Brandsaver insert from Proctor and Gamble in many newspapers. Look for it, and use it for the great P&G sales already going on.

If you shop at KMart, don’t forget to sign up for their emails. YOu will receive two coupons for $5 off at Kmart in the mail. And look at their online specials – $1.00 shipping on almost everything! Wow! And NEXT WEEK, beginning December 28, use the coupons from your P&G insert to shop sales at Kmart – and receive a $5 Kmart coupon when you buy $25 worth of participating P&G Brands. You’ll find Tide, Charmin, Folgers, Bounty, and Pampers on sale next week.

This past summer we got to stay at a friends beach house. It was an amazing experience, and we had a great time as a family. So how does that relate to free samples? Well, you see most of the stuff we packed, other than clothing and some food, was made up of free samples.

Instead of having to find and buy small bottles or individual units of shampoo, conditioner, body soap, facial soap, wipes, toothpaste, lotion, facial cloths, deodorant, shaving cream and all of the other little sundries that we can’t live without, I simply reached into a closet shoe box where I keep all of my free samples. Not only did we save money, but we got to try out new products at the same time. Also, by using up the samples instead of bringing big bottles of everything, there was more room in the suitcases for extra bathing suits and towels.

I can’t pass anywhere without wanting to pick up a book, whether it is at a bookstore, the grocery store or Wal-Mart. As a book-a-holic, I am really excited by Border’s 30% off coupon. Usually you can find a 10% or even a 20% off coupon, but the 30% coupon doesn’t come around very often.

There are no coupon inserts in the newspapers this weekend – if there are it will be a surprise. Usually the major publishers, Smartsource and Redplum do not publish an insert the Sunday before Christmas.However…

You’ve been clipping, and now it is time to cash in. So here are some great deals with cents off coupons!
